At the Regular Meeting of Council on May 22, 2012, the District of Sparwood Council adopted two bylaws to establish and fund the Michel Creek Water Extension Local Service Area.
Council received a petition from residents at a Special Meeting of Council on May 14, 2012 that met the sufficiency requirement of approval by owners. This result is represented by more than 50% of the assessed value of the land and improvements and more than 50% of the number of parcels affected. The petition was properly signed by the owners of 20 parcels (83%) of the 24 parcels that would be subject to the local service tax, representing $32,281,411 (97%) of the $33,168,511 total assessed value of the properties.
"There has been a tremendous amount of support for this project," says Mayor Lois Halko. "Council is delighted to be working with Teck and the community to provide a better service to the residents of Sparwood. We want to thank Teck on behalf of the community for their partnership and investment in Sparwood," says Halko.
Teck is contributing 92.5% of the $5 million dollar Michel Creek Water Extension project. Nic Milligan, Manager, Community and Governmental Affairs comments that "Teck is focused on working cooperatively to support the communities in the areas where we operate. We want to help create a positive legacy for communities and the environment."
