The District of Sparwood has an excellent employment opportunity for an enthusiastic, highly motivated student to join the team as Fire Services Assistant. The incumbent will perform a variety of general labour tasks including cleaning and maintenance repairs as well as inspecting facilities and equipment.

The Fire Services Assistant will work within the community to promote and educate the public with respect to the Fire Smart Program and attend weekly training sessions to become familiar with firefighting, public interaction and standard operating guidelines.

This position is a unionized position under CUPE local 2698. Students must have been in full time attendance at a secondary, post-secondary, technical or other educational institution and be planning to return to school.

Primary Function

Perform summer labour duties for the District of Sparwood by undertaking a variety of general labour type tasks including cleaning, maintenance and repairs at Fire Hall #1, #2 and the training facility. 

Duties will also include inspecting facilities and equipment, working within the community developing and reviewing business fire pre-plans and educating the general public with respect to Fire Smart program. Attendance at weekly training sessions to become familiar with firefighting, public interaction and Standard Operating Guidelines will also be a requirement.

Organizational Status

The Fire Services Assistant will receive general direction and varied levels of supervision from the Fire Chief, Deputy Chief, Fire Officers as appropriate and/or other employees as assigned.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Inspect and provide general cleaning, minor maintenance and repair to fire department facilities, apparatus and equipment including Fire Station #1, Fire Station #2 and the training facility. 
  • Assists in the inspection, review, development and documentation of pre-incident plans.Assists in the repair, painting and maintenance of training facility and firefighting equipment.
  • Operate a pickup and other light vehicles to attend properties (business and dwellings) to complete property reviews as required.Wash and clean equipment, check equipment, apparatus, and other gas-powered hand tools etc. for fuel, oil, air and/or lubricants and/or top up as required and ensures safety and efficiency of operations.

Equipment Used

Light trucks, power washer, weed eater, various firefighting tools, power saws, various hand tools, computer, photocopier and miscellaneous equipment.

Required Education / Work Experience

Must have been in full time attendance at a secondary, post-secondary, technical or other educational institution and planning to return to school.  

Required Skills and Abilities / Work Demands

  • Valid Class 5 Drivers License or Class 7N Drivers Licence.  
  • Experience relating to Fire Services and equipment maintenance or repair would be considered an asset.
  • Computer data entry and programming skills would be an asset.
