Students will perform summer labour duties for the District of Sparwood by assisting full and part-time employees with the maintenance and repair of parks, boulevards, sewer and water systems, roads, sidewalks and District facilities.

This position is a unionized position under CUPE local 2698. Students must have been in full time attendance at a secondary, post-secondary, technical or other educational institution and be planning to return to school.

Primary Function

Perform summer labour duties for the District of Sparwood by assisting full and part-time employees with the maintenance and repair of parks, boulevards, sewer and water systems, roads, sidewalks and District facilities. 

Organizational Status

Student Workers will be directed by the Roads and Parks Foreman and/or other employees assigned by the Director of Operations or by the Director of Community and Facility Services.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Primarily responsible for mowing and weed whipping all parks and greenbelts including edging around parking lots, sidewalks, planters and buildings.
  • Assemble and dismantle stages, tables and seating for special events.
  • Performs backup functions and other labour related duties as required or assigned.

Equipment Used

Operation of light trucks, mowers, edger’s, trimmers, blowers, roto rakes, pressure washers, wheelbarrows and various hand tools.  Responsible for the cleaning and the general maintenance of equipment including fuel, oil and air filter checks.

Required Education / Work Experience

Must have been in full time attendance at a secondary, post-secondary, technical or other educational institution and planning to return to school.

Required Skills and Abilities / Work Demands

  • Valid Class 5 Drivers License or Class 7N Drivers Licence.  
  • Experience relating to public works, landscaping, building maintenance or janitorial would be considered an asset.
