2019 Coal Miner Days!

Sparwood Coal Miner Days Society is excited to announce that this year’s events will be all week-long June 3- 9. Each year we work hard to bring a fun, inexpensive weekend to the residents and visitors of Sparwood, while highlighting all of the great things that our community has to offer.

Reminder to Lock the Garbage Bins

The District of Sparwood would like to remind all residents on the importance of properly securing their garbage containers. Bears are actively on the prowl for food and unsecured garbage poses a severe risk for human-wildlife conflict.

2018 Carbon Action Revenue Incentive Public Report

The 2018 Climate Action Revenue Incentive Program (CARIP) Public Report is now available. 

The CARIP report summarizes actions taken in 2018 and proposed for 2019 to reduce corporate and community-wide energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) and reports on progress towards achieving carbon neutrality.

Notice of Hearing: Temporary Housing Camp at 8000 Highway 43

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that a hearing will be held on June 4, 2019 at 6:00 pm in Community Hall (upstairs in the Leisure Centre), 367 Pine Avenue, Sparwood, for Temporary Use Permit 2018-001 to allow a Temporary Housing Camp at 8000 Highway 43.

Senior's Birthday Book

The District of Sparwood recognizes the contribution that seniors make to our community.  Those Sparwood seniors who have, or will, reach the age of 75 years this year are invited to meet with Mayor Wilks and members of Council to sign the “Senior’s Birthday Book” and receive a commemorative pin.

Baldy Ridge Extension Update

Teck has released the Socio-Community and Economic Effects Annual Report for the Baldy Ridge Extension and scheduled an annual meeting for the project. The Livability Study has entered its second phase and new information and opportunities to engage with the project are out now!

2019 Residential Cleanup

Beginning Tuesday, May 21, 2019, the District will be offering a Residential Spring Cleanup service. 

Items* can be placed just off the property line to be picked up with a loader and brought to the Transfer Station. 

To participate, you must register by May 17, 2019. Cost is $20 but free for those over 65.

Seasonal Closure of Coal Leach Road

Teck has issued notice that there will be a seasonal private road closure on a section of Coal Leach Road at the 82.5 km marker from Monday April 15, 2019.

The road will remain closed until water is no longer flowing over the road. Access from Corbin Road to Coal Leach Road will not be possible during this time.

2019 Community Cleanup

It’s that time of year again! We are challenging local clubs, workplaces and families to come out to the Sparwood Leisure Centre Playground on Saturday, May 4, to help clean up the garbage that has accumulated throughout the winter.

Avalanche Warning issued by Avalanche Canada

Avalanche Canada , in partnership with Parks Canada and Alberta’s Kananaskis Country has issued a special public avalanche warning for recreational backcountry users.

Annual Building & Vacancy Reports Published

District staff have released the annual Vacancy Rate Report and Building Permit Reports. These reports detail the current residential vacancy rate and building permits issued in the previous year.

2019 - 2023 Financial Plan Open House

If you live in Sparwood, you are invited to a Public Budget Consultation Meeting that will be held to discuss the District’s Financial Plan for the next five years. Council invites and encourages the public to attend and provide feedback that will assist Council in setting priorities for our community.

Open house will be help Wednesday, March 20 from 4:00 - 6:00pm in Council Chambers (136 Spruce Avenue). For more information click here

The District Wants Your Input For Its New Zoning Bylaw

The District is engaging the community to address any issues that exist with the current zoning bylaw so that the regulations better fit within the context of Sparwood.

RDEK Solid Waste Management Plan Review

The RDEK is currently reviewing its Solid Waste Management Plan (SWMP). They are asking for the public's input on how they use the current solid waste and recycling systems and what they'd like to see in the future.  Survey deadline is February 25, 2019.

From January 15 - February 28, 2019 the District will be seeking resident, worker and visitor participation in engagement activities related to the livability study. Participate through an online survey, visit a pop-up office, attend a workshop or stop in at our booth at Winterfest!
