The District of Sparwood has declared a local state of emergency at 16:00 on June 13, 2022 in response to imminent overland flooding concerns in the areas of:
- 100 Aspen Drive (Mountainview Mobile Home Park)
- 9555 Highway 43 (lower Lodgepole Mobile Home Park)
- Properties along GN Road
- 1200 Matevic Road (lower Matevic)
These properties have also been placed on evacuation alert as water levels have significantly increased with annual freshet and now present imminent flooding concerns with the prolonged heavy rainfall which is expected to remain in place for the next 24 hours. The Emergency Operations Centre at the District of Sparwood, which was activated at 13:30 will continue to monitor the situation, and provide updates via the District of Sparwood website (www.sparwood.ca) and Facebook Page.
“Safety of Sparwood residents is of the highest importance,” says Sparwood Mayor David Wilks. “The current levels of the rivers, combined with the significant rainfall lends to a situation that has now compromised some of our high-risk areas. This alert was enacted to provide residents with time to get prepared, should the alert escalate to an order. We encourage everyone in the alert area to have a grab and go kit ready by the door, and ensure they have safety plans in place. Please look out for each other, for neighbors and those who may need assistance.”
A sandbag station is set up at Engelmann Spruce Drive past the Mainroad Yard and Fire Hall #1. Sandbags are in the bin adjacent to the pile. Residents are reminded to bring their own shovels and gloves.
All residents are strongly encouraged to be prepared for spring flooding by having a safety plan in place, creating a grab-and-go bag, and following reliable news sources.
