The Active Transportation Corridor Project is an exciting project which will improve community connectivity through continuity between existing transportation corridors. The construction of 1700 meters of paved pathways will link two major gaps in the District’s path network that currently use a gravel road shoulder for connectivity. The proposed pathways will take the active transportation users away from the road edge, resulting in a safer, connected pathway.
The Ponderosa Drive location starts at Carbonado Court Apartments (1299 Ponderosa Drive) and ends at Sparwood Heights drive, totaling 720 meters. The Michel Creek Road pathway starts at Industrial Road #1 and ends at the common crossing point near Highway 43 totaling 980 meters.
Ponderosa Drive is the main access into the Sparwood Heights Subdivision and thus a busy through-way for local motorized traffic. Michel Creek Road is a heavily used roadway with 24/7 industrial traffic providing the only access to Spardell Mobile Home Park and other houses along GN Road and Michel Creek Road. There is currently no dedicated walkway linking this area to the rest of the District path networks.
The Active Transportation Corridor Project is anticipated to be completed in 2022 pending weather delays or other unforeseen circumstances.
