Effective at 11:00 am Mountain time on Friday, June 18, Category 3 open fires will be prohibited throughout the District of Sparwood and will remain in place until the public is otherwise notified.
Specifically, prohibited activities that would constitute a Category 3 fire include:
- any fire larger than two metres high by three metres wide;
- three or more concurrently burning piles no larger than two metres high by three metres wide;
- burning of one or more windrows; and
- burning of stubble or grass over an area greater than 0.2 hectares
This prohibition does not ban campfires that are a 0.6 metres high by 0.6 metres wide or smaller or approved fire pits and does not apply to cooking stoves that use gas, propane or briquettes.
Residents are reminded to always use safe burning practices – which include not lighting or burning campfires or other material in windy conditions and always ensuring that there is enough water and tools on hand and easily accessible to contain the fire. Fires must always be attended by an adult and fully extinguished, with the ashes cold to the touch before leaving the area for any length of time.
