Reporting to the Director of Community Services, the Chief Facility Maintenance Operator’s (CFMO) primary responsibility is to oversee the maintenance of Sparwood’s recreation facilities and municipal buildings. The CMFO will supervise a staff of four full-time, two casual and seasonal support staff, scheduling, assigning, and overseeing all the work performed.
The Chief Facility Maintenance Operator’s (CFMO) should have a high level of proficiency in plumbing, carpentry and basic electrical work. The CMFO will be a self-motivated and collaborative individual, playing a key role in overseeing the inspection and maintenance of playgrounds and Leisure Centre outdoor amenities as well as working with Public Works to maintain local parks and trails. This role is responsible for various administrative duties related to the role; which include the development of safe work procedures and processes, documentation of facility maintenance processes, processing invoice, quotes and contract handling as well as documenting the training of maintenance personnel ensuring the work performed and the facilities are in compliance with WorkSafe BC and Technical Safety BC Standards.
Primary Duties
- Acts as the Chief Engineer, overseeing the operation and maintenance of the arena physical plant.
- Responsible for HVAC preventative maintenance programs, servicing and inspections.
- Oversees the operation, troubleshoots and conducts repairs, on the pool filtration plant and related equipment.
- Schedules and directs daily, weekly, monthly and annual maintenance.
- Conducts general building maintenance duties and repairs (i.e. plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting etc.).
- Inspects and maintains parks, trails, playgrounds and sports fields.
- Assist in the daily leisure centre custodial duties, snow removal and related duties.
- Backfills for maintenance operators as needed and performs custodial and general maintenance duties.
- Provides daily supervision of maintenance staff including scheduling and the assignment of work to be performed.
- Provides leadership, mentoring and training to maintenance staff.
- Troubleshoots/problem solves and reports facility operational concerns as they pertain to facility interiors and building envelopes.
Required Certifications
- Minimum five years related, progressively responsible supervisory experience and operational knowledge of recreation facility maintenance
- Management Skills for Supervisors Certificate or equivalent
- Arena Ice Makers Certificate
- Pool Operator II
- Extensive knowledge of preventative maintenance, custodial and construction activities and techniques
- Extensive knowledge of the principles, functions and operations of heating, air-conditioning, ventilation, pool filtration and related systems
- Experience in the use of computer applications including DDC systems and energy management
- Refrigeration Operator or higher classification
- Valid Class 5 Drivers License
Certifications Considered as an Asset
- Journeyman status in Carpentry, Electrical or Plumbing
- Playground Safety Inspection Certification

This position is a unionized position under CUPE local 2698. The 2024 hourly wage rate is $44.45/hour as per the current collective agreement. This is a permanent, full-time position. For a full position description please see below.

Key duties will also include the management and maintenance of HVAC & automation systems, overseeing the inspection and maintenance of playgrounds and Leisure Centre outdoor amenities as well as working with Public Works to maintain local parks and trails. The CFMO should have a high level of proficiency in plumbing, carpentry and basic electrical work.

Required Skills and Abilities
- Strong leadership skills to manage a comparatively large workforce consisting of several full and part-time employees and contract workers, with a focus on mentoring and motivating employees.
- Must possess a solid understanding of the BC Building Code
- Must be able to utilize a computerized building operating system
- Must be able to utilize Microsoft products, primarily Excel, Word and Outlook
- Must have exemplary communication skills, both written and verbal
- Must have advanced understanding and ability to complete plumbing and carpentry work with respect to facility, arena physical plant, h-vac systems and pool filtration plant repairs.
