District Appoints Deputy CAO and Director of Community Services

The District of Sparwood Council is pleased to announce the development of a new position within the senior management team. The Deputy Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) role is intended to be filled by a senior member of the team. Their responsibility is to provide CAO succession and coverage, provide support and guidance on Corporate Services functions, and assist Department Heads with projects and strategic priorities.  The individual selected to fill this position will serve as the Deputy CAO while retaining their core responsibilities overseeing a department or functional area.

Lyle Hannan, the current Director of Corporate Services has been appointed to this important role and will also be transitioning from his current role to the newly vacant Director of Community Services. Lyle has a strong background overseeing municipal recreation departments as well as previous experience as a CAO.

“This was a natural fit,” says Sparwood Mayor David Wilks. “Lyle will bring a depth of knowledge to the role of Deputy CAO and Director of Community Services as his background and experience align perfectly with the duties and responsibilities of these positions. Mayor and Council are pleased to have succession planning for the CAO, as well as a high level of support for departments to carry out projects and strategic priorities,” says Mayor Wilks. Michele Schalekamp, Chief Administrative Officer is excited about the change and the skills Lyle will bring to the table. “As a proven leader, Lyle has been instrumental in providing direction and support to the team at the District of Sparwood. His ability to manage multiple projects and priorities as well as provide high level oversight relating to legislation, policy and many other corporate and municipal functions will serve the District well as he fills these roles. Not only does he bring a corporate services background to the table, his previous role as CAO and extensive background in recreation will lead to a path of continued success,” she says.

Lyle has been with the District of Sparwood for over a year and has immersed himself in the many key projects on the District’s horizon. “It has been a great pleasure to see many of the strategic priorities and important projects, such as the Multi-Purpose Facility, Centennial Square and the redevelopment of Fire Hall #2, come forward to Council and gain endorsement. I look forward to continuing to assist with these projects and build upon the strong recreational foundation within the Director of Community Services position,” he says.

This new role was developed as part of a cost neutral restructure of the management team, seeing a newly named Manager of Corporate Services role, an upgraded Manager of HR & Communications role and an upcoming Executive Assistant, Corporate Services position.

The District thanks Duane Lawrence, former Director of Community and Facility Services for his contribution to the community over the past ten years. He is wished much success in his new role as CAO in Ucluelet, BC.
