Fire Prevention Week 2022

The Sparwood Fire Department is celebrating the 100th anniversary of Fire Prevention Week TM (FPW), October 9-15, 2022. This year’s FPW campaign, ‘Fire won’t wait. Plan your escape,’ works to educate everyone about simple but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe from home fires.

The theme focuses on planning and practicing a fire escape. Having a plan and being prepared will help to ensure that everyone in the household knows what to do when they hear the sound of a fire alarm.

The Sparwood Fire Department shares these key home fire escape planning tips:

  • Make sure your plan meets the needs of all your family members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities.
  • Smoke alarms should be installed inside every sleeping room, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of your home. Smoke alarms should be interconnected so when one sounds, they all sound.
  • Know at least two ways out of every room, if possible. Make sure all doors and windows open easily.
  • Have an outside meeting place a safe distance from your home where everyone should meet.
  • Practice your home fire drill at least twice a year with everyone in the household, including guests. Practice at least once during the day and at night.

To encourage fire safety planning, the District and Fire Services team are launching a Home Escape Plan Contest. This contest, open to Sparwood youth will encourage youth and their families to map out a plan for their homes. Winners will be selected for plan completeness and creativity.

More information on this contest can be found below.

A highlight of Fire Prevention Week will be the Sparwood Fire Department Open House taking place on Tuesday, October 11, 2022 from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm at Fire Hall #1, located at 479 Pine Avenue. This free, family event will include a meet and greet with Sparky and lessons on fire safety.
