DELEGATIONS

FJ Mitchell Elementary PAC

Lyndsay Gerscht, Vice-President of Frank J Mitchell Parent Advisory Commission (PAC) made a presentation to Council on the PAC’s Playground Equipment Initiative. Their goal is to raise $95,000 to expand the existing playground at Frank J Mitchell Elementary School. The PAC is requesting a donation of $7,500 from the District towards the project.

BUSINESS

Recreation Facilities Tour

Council directed Staff to organize a recreation facilities tour for all available members of Council of the Kainai Multi-Purpose Building in Stand Off, AB; The Dome in Red Deer, AB; Crescent Point Regional Field House in Okotoks, AB; Genesis Centre in Calgary, AB; and the Badlands Community Facility in Drumheller, AB. The tour, which will take place after the COVID-19 pandemic is over, will provide an opportunity for Council to determine possible amenities that could be included within a new recreation centre in Sparwood.

Lions Club Storage Shed

Council approved a 30-year lease between the District and the Sparwood Lions Club for property located at 400 Lions Park Place. The Club maintains a storage building in Lions Park for storage of supplies and materials owned by the Club.

Well #4 Watermain Upgrade

Council awarded the “Well #4 Watermain Upgrade at Pumphouse 1 & Sanitary Servicing to 6000 Highway 43” project to Transcendent Mining & Mobilization Inc of Sparwood for the price tendered of $161,952.34, which excludes the optional sanitary service to 6000 Highway 43.

Miners Memorial Wall Policy

Council approved a new Miners Memorial Wall Policy which establishes criteria and the process under which the District of Sparwood will update the memorial wall at Titan Park.

Sister City – Kamisunagawa, Japan

Council will send a letter to the District’s sister city Kamisunagawa, Japan to see if there is an interest in renewing relationships between Kamisunagawa and Sparwood. Sparwood resident, Sarah Madsen has volunteered to take a lead on renewing friendships with Kamisunagawa through cultural recipe exchanges, seniors’ crafts, on-line youth gaming tournaments, school pen-pals, and other on-line exchanges.


Mine Rescue Competition

Council authorized an in-kind donation in the amount of $1,901.55 to the East Kootenay Mines Industrial Safety Association for use of District facilities to host the 99th Annual Mine Recue and First Aid Competition on May 9, 2020 subject to the COVID-19 pandemic being over.

Public Notice – District Facilities

Main Office

The District of Sparwood will be limiting public access to the Main Office, located at 136 Spruce Avenue to help protect the health and safety of employees and the public. For urgent matters that require in-person attendance, please call ahead to schedule an appointment.

Sparwood Council meetings will continue as scheduled however, delegations will not be permitted to attend in person. We encourage those who wish to be a delegation to forward their presentation to the District of Sparwood in advance and call in during the meeting to speak to their topic.

Leisure Centre Complex

All activities at the Henry Volkmann Memorial Leisure Complex have been suspended to the public as of March 16th until further notice. Refunds will be issued for pre-paid bookings and classes but please be patient as we try to process these via phone and email and reach out to everyone who will be requiring refunds. In situations where refunds are not able to be processed electronically or over the phone, we will issue refunds upon re-opening of the facility. The spring Community Information and Registration Night has also been cancelled until further notice.

Public Works and Firehall #1 and #2

Public access to the Public Works Office and Fire Hall #1 and #2 is closed to the public. The offices will continue to be staffed and they will be happy to assist you via phone or email.
