Mayor’s Monthly Editorial, April 2023

The first Town Hall Meeting with the newly elected Council is scheduled to be held next month. Town Hall Meetings are an important platform for public engagement, providing an opportunity for Council to share news and information about upcoming projects and topics of interest, but also supporting important two-way dialogue with members of the community.

Taking place on Wednesday, May 3, 2023 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Seniors Drop In Centre, the Town Hall Meeting will start and close with time for residents to learn more about what’s happening in the District. Doors will open at 5:30 pm and posters will be set up around the room with details on items such as upcoming projects, operational developments and future plans. During this time attendees may have informal conversations with members of Council and Staff. At 6:00 pm formal updates will begin and Council will be available to provide additional clarification and answer questions during the open mic period at the end of the evening.

Town Hall Meetings create an opportunity for residents to voice their opinion and share their ideas.  With problems or concerns, we also ask residents to come forward with solutions. This will not be a forum for endless complaints, but rather an opportunity for respectful and meaningful discussion. Hearing feedback from community members is a priority for Council.  Working together to develop options to address problems helps Council to develop a comprehensive understanding of the thoughts and views of residents and is a key component of informed decision making.

With significant projects and activities on the horizon for Sparwood, Council is looking forward to sharing more information. Residents can expect to learn about strategic priorities, the hot tub replacement, upcoming developments, paving plans, Centennial Plaza and much more. The Town Hall Meeting is open to everyone and we strongly encourage residents to attend.

Community members may submit ideas and suggestions in advance of the meeting to sparwood@sparwood.ca. Both in-person and submitted discussion points must support a respectful conversation.

For those who are unable to attend, a synopsis will be posted on the District’s website at www.sparwood.ca  following the meeting.
