Mayor’s Monthly Editorial, August 2024

Council is excited to share two projects nearing completion that will positively impact the safety and well-being of Sparwood residents. While each vary widely in their development, scope and cost, they will both serve the community for many years to come.

The first, is the highly anticipated arrival of Sparwood’s newest fire truck, Engine 55 which will replace Engine 1447, which was manufactured in 2001. The planning for this truck began in 2021 as small town and rural communities are required to replace their engines every twenty years.

Not only does Engine 55 look sharp, it comes equipped with many features that are designed with health and safety in mind for both firefighters and the community. The firefighting package is built around a 6000 liters per minute water pump that will supply more water than any engine in the fleet. The truck also features a ladder package the ranges from 12 to 35 feet and a 1250 gallon per minute top mounted deck gun to allow for maximum reach at safer distances for firefighters. The cab is constructed with reinforced pillars for crush and rollover protection and advanced in-cab air filtration to combat contaminants.

This truck will be heavily relied upon in the department and will serve as a valuable tool to protect lives and property. Engine 55 will receive a formal welcome to the community during the push-in ceremony at Fire Hall #1. To learn more about Engine 55 visit https://sparwood.ca/welcoming-engine-55/.

The second project is shade sails which will be located at the Sparwood Leisure Centre at both the Spray Park and the Skate Park. Council identified these were a need as the parks are heavily utilized and lack shade, a much-needed element during the hot summer months. These sails will provide large spans of shade in each area allowing users to escape the sun. Currently, the sail posts are set in place and the sails will be custom manufactured to size and raised later next month.

As Council sets the 2025 budget and strategic priorities, we will continue to focus on items that will improve the quality of life for those who call Sparwood home. As always, we welcome conversation, ideas and feedback from the community. Contact information for Council can be found at https://sparwood.ca/contact/.
