Reflecting on 2024, Mayor and Council are incredibly proud of the growth and achievements completed over the past 12 months. The year was not only filled with many important projects and milestones being met, but we were also able to celebrate our community spirit through many activities and events. From infrastructure advancements to vibrant community celebrations, here’s a look back at some of the year’s highlights.
Economic Growth
2024 was a year of economic diversification for Sparwood. While our community’s strong ties to the mining industry remain steadfast, new businesses opened their doors, bringing fresh opportunities and services to the area. Teck, now EVR, broke ground and have been busy building their new office building and we were thrilled to welcome several new businesses into the community such as Pizza Hut, Canco & Pita Pit and Dollarama. We see this trend continuing in 2025 as business and land inquiries continue to prove that Sparwood is seen as a great place to do business.
Infrastructure
Throughout the year we have been able to start and complete many important infrastructure projects. Some have been highly visible to the community such as the repainting of the Titan and heritage artifacts, installation of shade sails at the Spray Park and Skate Park, the completion of Centennial Street East Sidewalk and the paving program. Others, may have been less noticeable, but still of great importance, such as the Community Hall roof repair and the massive work in planning for a new wastewater treatment plant.
Fire Truck
Residents in Sparwood celebrated alongside us as we welcomed the arrival of Sparwood’s newest fire truck, Engine 55 during the push-in ceremony held in August. Engine 55 replaced the old engine 1447, which was manufactured in 2001. Not only does the truck look sharp, it comes equipped with many features that are designed with health and safety in mind for both firefighters and the community.
Time Capsule
On March 19, 2024 the Time Capsule was opened, forty years after it was placed inside the Greenwood Mall. The contents of the time capsule included photos, images, letters and drawings by residents, clubs and groups of the time. Many people attended the opening event, and the contents are now showcased virtually on the District’s website and are displayed and archived at the Sparwood Museum.
Recreation
Recreation, and the Recreation Centre was shaped by many things that happened in 2024. Some of these items will continue to carry on into 2025, such as the establishment of the Recreation Facility Advisory Committee (RFAC). Moving into the spring, a major part of the RFAC’s work will be community engagement. Residents of Sparwood can expect many opportunities to provide thoughts on what the future of recreation in Sparwood looks like.
The District of Sparwood is also undertaking a study to explore and recommend future approaches for setting recreation user fees and charges (group facility rentals, memberships, drop-in fees, etc.). The study recommendations will balance the financial sustainability of providing quality recreation facilities and programs, while also ensuring that all residents have affordable access to these highly valued and beneficial services. Significant community engagement was undertaken in 2024 and Council will learn more about what was heard early in the new year.
Lighting up the Lions Park Loop began in the fall of 2024 and when completed, this project will see one of Sparwood’s most popular path’s being lit up throughout the seasons to allow for early morning or evening enjoyment.
Lastly, a Facility Condition Assessment was undertaken for both the Leisure Centre and the Municipal Office. Identifying replacement, repair and maintenance components of each facility will allow Council to appropriately plan and budget for the items in the years ahead.
Events
Community spirit shone brightly as we celebrated many events in 2024, such as Winterfest, Volunteer Appreciation, Canada Day and the Fall Harvest. The annual Coal Miner Days celebration in June saw attendance from people near and far with music, food, and family-friendly activities. Local volunteers played a vital role in these events, showcasing the heart and generosity of what makes Sparwood so special and we appreciate each and every person who gives back to the community.
We extend heartfelt thanks to every resident, business owner, and community leader who contributed to Sparwood’s success in 2024. Together, we’ve built a year to remember and laid the groundwork for an even better future.
Here’s to Sparwood in 2025—a community that grows stronger with every passing year.
