Progress in Sparwood is at an all-time high with several new businesses opening their doors in the past 12 months. Council has been thrilled to welcome McDonalds, Dollarama, Sparwood Pizza, Pizza Hut, Canco Gas and the Pita Pit to the community. The launch of these businesses not only provides options for those that live, work or visit our community, but also proves that Sparwood is undeniably growing and is recognized as a great place to do business. In addition to new business development, Council is pleased to recognize many of the current businesses that are expanding and advancing their services in the community.
Along with growth in business, development in housing has been at the forefront of our community. Three subdivisions that are underway and should be completed this building season are a 3 lot multi-family and campground subdivision in Whiskey Jack, a 26 lot single family subdivision in Whiskey Jack and a 21 lot subdivision of mixed multi and single family development in Westwood. The creation of these lots will enable more housing options to become available. At all levels of government, housing is a focus and the District looks forward to seeing more housing come on the market.
Council has a consistent focus on sustainable progress and development. As a municipality, we are heavily focused on essential infrastructure such as the Wastewater Treatment Plant and the maintenance of the infrastructure we currently have in place. Council also pays particular attention to the future needs of the community. This can be seen through the Recreation Facility Advisory Committee which will be reviewing the current recreation facility and evaluating the needs of the community. Many smaller projects such as security cameras, shade sails, the paving program, pool slide and many others will improve the provision of services or quality of life for residents.
Sustainable growth does not occur without balance. Every decision of Council is made with a financial lens. Some projects this year, such as the stage and washrooms at Centennial Plaza have gone out for tender and came in with construction prices significantly over budget. Council then must make tough decisions. In this particular instance, the stage and washroom project was deferred and staff will be seeking out grant opportunities so this project may come back in the future. It is critical that progress is evaluated to ensure the financial integrity and stability of the municipality remains intact.
Sparwood’s vision statement identifies the goal of being a progressive, welcoming and livable community and Council continues to strive to be just that. We look forward to a busy summer and fall and for all the future planning that will come ahead. The positive trajectory Sparwood is on will enable the community to continue to be a place we can all be proud to call home.
