The District of Sparwood is inviting applications from motivated, energetic, and driven candidates who encompass the skills, qualifications, and abilities, as well as passion for community service for the position of Paid On-Call Firefighter. The Sparwood Fire Services is led by the District’s Fire Chief and Deputy Fire Chief, who oversee the team which includes the Assistant Chief, Training Captain, Captains, Lieutenants, and regular Firefighters. There are two Fire Halls within the District of Sparwood, one located in Sparwood Proper and one in Sparwood Heights.
Position Summary
As outlined in the Sparwood Fire Services Bylaw, 974, 2008 found here https://bit.ly/3M0nGB1 the Sparwood Fire Department provide the services of fire protection, the rescue of persons from hazardous or dangerous situations and the rescue of persons from motor vehicle incidents within the service area.
Members of the Fire Services team participate in and maintain cleanliness, servicing of equipment, apparatus, turnout gear, and uniforms. Firefighters will be required to participate in training, drills, and practice sessions and may participate in various public education programs and public relations events.
Paid On-Call Firefighters are compensated for attending practices, call-outs, courses and scheduled on-call duty shifts. Practices are held every Tuesday evening at 7:00 pm. Firefighters are required to attend a minimum number of practices and calls to maintain their position within the department.
Requirements
- At least 19 years of age
- Highschool diploma or equivalent
- Must reside within the District of Sparwood
- Valid Class 5 non-restricted driver’s license
- Valid and clear criminal record, and vulnerable sector check
- Driving record that demonstrates safe and responsible driving behavior
- Must be in good physical condition and be able to successfully complete an agility test
- Must be able to undertake prolonged and arduous work under adverse conditions and in inclement weather
- Must be able to complete required training sessions
- Must maintain an acceptable attendance record for emergency calls
- Must work well with others as a team and be able to function in the dynamic and fast paced emergency services environment
- Must be able to deal with the public in a professional and courteous manner.
Considered an Asset
- Ability to respond to daytime emergencies
- Class 1, 2, 3, or 4 driver’s licenses
- Air brake endorsement
- Fire related courses, such as NFPA 1001 Level II, NFPA 1002, NFPA 472
- Advanced first aid training
- Previous fire or emergency services experience
- Mine Rescue experience
- Strong mechanical aptitude
Paid On Call Firefighter Benefits
