Sparwood Begins Recreation Fees and Charges Review

The District of Sparwood is undertaking a study to explore and recommend future approaches for setting recreation user fees and charges (group facility rentals, memberships, drop-in fees, etc.). The study recommendations will balance the financial sustainability of providing quality recreation facilities and programs, while also ensuring that all residents have affordable access to these highly valued and beneficial services. RC Strategies, a consulting firm specializing in recreation planning and policy, has been hired by the District to carry out the study.

Engagement with the community is a critical aspect of the project. A public survey will be available beginning mid-September through the District’s website that will provide residents with an opportunity to offer feedback on current fees and charges, the affordability of current facilities and programs, as well as potential future approaches and key values that should drive how the District sets fees moving forward. Discussion sessions will also be convened with representatives from facility user groups and frequent facility patrons. The information gathered through the engagement and other research being conducted by the project team will help inform the identification of potential options and approaches.

“Council is committed to ensuring the fees and charges review includes a number of community engagement opportunities to ensure public feedback is captured and considered as we make decisions for the future,” says Sparwood Mayor, David Wilks. However, as much as we provide the opportunities, it is up to members of the community to take the initiative to be part of the conversation, sharing thoughts or concerns. We will directly connect with many individuals and groups and will also have opportunities for engagement in person at public events, virtually and via survey to reach as many people as possible. We encourage everyone to get involved, whether you use many recreation amenities, or just one, your feedback is important to us.

Watch for more information on the District website at https://sparwood.ca/rec-fees-review/ for updates on the project and opportunities to engage.
