The District of Sparwood is pleased to announce the launch of the Street Art Banner Program. This program is designed to showcase the work of local artists and beautify the community with selected art pieces to be printed and displayed on aluminum banners. The banners will be hung on utility poles in key locations throughout the community for residents and visitors to enjoy.
Artists from Sparwood, the Elk Valley, and the Columbia Basin area are invited to submit artwork that falls within the scope of heritage, environment, connection to the community, and love of Sparwood. Submissions will be evaluated by the Street Banner Advisory Group and Sparwood Council.
“We are really excited to see this project move forward. We were fortunate to secure a $20,000 grant from the Columbia Basin Trust, which allows us to kick off this program and invest in the first set of banners. It is Council’s hope that, through this program, we can showcase artwork from residents and continue to beautify and connect the community through art,” said Sparwood Mayor David Wilks.
Each artist may submit up to two pieces, using any medium for consideration. Artists of selected pieces will receive a $500 honorarium and have their art printed on banners and showcased on the District of Sparwood website. The submission period will close on August 31, 2020 at 11:59 pm MST.
In addition to a call for art, Council is also seeking nominations of a youth and senior volunteer to sit on the Street Banner Advisory Group, which will take all submissions and evaluate them for selection.
