Mayor’s Monthly Editorial, January 2024

Winter may be in full swing in Sparwood, but there is no shortage of things to do. This season brings many opportunities to get fresh air and enjoy the outdoors with a variety of activities for all ages. Whether you’re looking for a high intensity activity, or just to pass the time on a weekend afternoon, you can find an abundance of winter fun right outside your backdoor.

Thanks to the hard work from volunteers of the Sparwood Trails Alliance and the Sunset Ridge Ski Society there are plenty of groomed trails in and around the community. The Sunset Ridge Ski Society rents ski’s and has a low annual membership cost, making this sport affordable and accessible for everyone. Learn more about the Society at www.skisparwood.com and watch their Facebook page for grooming updates. The Sparwood Trails Alliance regularly maintains a significant amount of trail networks for enthusiasts to enjoy. Theyhost a variety of events throughout the year to build community and provide opportunities for people to become familiar with trails. You can learn more about the Sparwood Trails Alliance at www.sparwoodtrailsalliance.ca.

Sparwood is also home to two outdoor ice surfaces, the Lions Park Skating Loop and the Outdoor Rink in Sparwood Heights. The Lions Park Loop, located near the Sparwood Leisure Centre is approximately 400 m long and weaves through the trees within the park. This amenity received an Honorable Mention at the 2022 UBCM Award for Excellence in Service Delivery, you can learn more about the Loop and the award at www.sparwood.ca/district-receives-honorable-mention-at-ubcm/. Also located on the grounds of the Leisure Centre is a toboggan hill, which families of all ages enjoy.  The Outdoor Rink in Sparwood Heights is perfect for an evening scrimmage or family skate. Lights come on at the outdoor rink from 4:30 pm to 10:00 pm so skaters can enjoy fun throughout the evening. As both of these ice surfaces are natural, they are weather dependent. Watch the District of Sparwood Facebook page for updates.

The newly revitalized Centennial Plaza is home to thousands of lights and a fire pit, creating an ambient and welcoming space to enjoy in the winter and warm up. The gas fire pit can be turned on at anytime by the push of a button. Public Works removes snow from a portion of the Plaza throughout the winter, making this a space everyone can enjoy.

Mayor and Council encourage you to explore one or all of the many great winter activities within Sparwood and as always we appreciate your feedback. If there is something that you love, or feel could be improved, we look forward to hearing from you.
