Mayor’s Monthly Editorial, March 2024

With the seasons changing from winter to spring and back again, Mayor and Council want to remind residents about the importance of safety and services in and around the community this time of year.

As Public Works focuses heavily on snow removal or street sweeping, it is of the utmost importance to use caution around equipment. Residents who are approaching equipment must not follow or get close as there are blind spots that make it difficult to be seen. It is critical to make eye contact with the operator before going around or in front. Following too closely or passing unsafely not only puts yourself at risk, but also the operator and other motorists and pedestrians in front or behind. Please have patience and make safety a priority for the crews conducting this important work.

As the snow starts to melt, residents may notice items within the community that need a little maintenance or repair. Because of this, we wanted to highlight an important tool on the District website, which allows residents to easily report non-emergency issues or concerns.

By visiting the ‘Report a Problem or Request a Service’ form on the website, located near the bottom of the ‘Residents’ tab, community members can easily notify District staff of problems or concerns. Whether it be an animal control question, street light issue or a sidewalk in need of repair, this form allows residents to quickly submit all the necessary details to have the issue investigated. By utilizing the Service Request Form on the website, residents can receive real-time updates regarding their submission, including response status, outcome and completion date. From an internal operations perspective, this form is a valuable feature that allows staff to easily direct concerns to the appropriate department, keep track of reports and respond back, efficiently and effectively.

A second way to reach staff is through the ‘Contact Us’ section of the website, located within the blue header at the top of the home page. Your submission through this section of the website will be directed to the appropriate department and a member of staff will reach out to you. This section of the site is utilized more frequently for general questions or comments, whereas the Service Request form is geared towards items that need to be investigated or addressed.

Council is appreciative of the pride that residents have for Sparwood. Being observant, documenting and reporting concerns regarding problems or maintenance is what allows us to continue to have a community known for its beauty and upkeep.

More information on the Service Request form can be found at www.sparwood.ca/residents/report-a-problem-or-request-service. Residents can find contact details or submit information via the Contact Us form by visiting www.sparwood.ca/contact/.
