Recreation Maintenance II

Reporting to the Chief Facility Maintenance Operator, Recreation Maintenance II works as part of a cooperative team and performs a variety of tasks requiring agility and physical effort related to the operation and maintenance of the Sparwood Leisure Centre. The successful candidate is responsible for custodial services, general facility maintenance, pump and motor replacement, plumbing, maintaining, and operating the arena physical plant, leisure pool filtration systems, and park facilities. Recreation Maintenance II completes carpentry and plumbing projects and assists with maintaining other District facilities. Other duties include installing and maintaining ice surfaces, working on HVAC and water supply systems, horticultural work, servicing and maintaining sports fields, walking trails and related recreation areas and equipment. The successful candidate will be responsible for shoveling and snow removal; inspecting facilities and equipment; preparing reports and performing other duties as assigned.

Primary Duties

  • Provides custodial services related to care and maintenance of District facilities
  • Completes snow removal from facility grounds and parking areas
  • Monitors and maintains facility HVAC, DHW, heating and cooling systems, arena physical plant, pool plant operation and related building systems
  • Provides janitorial duties related to care and maintenance of District facilities
  • Monitors and maintains arena physical plant and related systems
  • Monitors and maintains pool filtration and heating systems
  • Inspects, conducts repairs and maintains parks, sport fields, turf, trails, fencing, gardens and playground equipment, outdoor recreation facilities and related outdoor spaces
  • Checks and maintains vehicles and equipment used in the department
  • Removes, installs and repairs toilets, vanities, water supply and return lines, and other plumbing systems
  • Troubleshoots, repairs and maintains boilers, pumps and motors

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Must have mechanical aptitude to complete repairs to facility systems effectively and efficiently
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work under pressure
  • Must be able to utilize a computerized building operating system
  • Must be able to communicate effectively orally, via email and logbooks
  • Ability to perform labor-intensive work, frequently stand and walk throughout the day and work in inclement weather
  • Ability to work with the public in a positive and affective manner

Certifications and Experience

  • Refrigeration Operator Certification
  • Minimum 3 – 4 years’ experience maintaining building and facility mechanical systems
  • Pool Operator Level I
  • Arena Ice Maker I or higher
  • Building Service Worker Level II
  • Park and Sport Field Level I
  • Playground Safety Inspection Certificate
  • Valid Class 5  Drivers License
  • 3-4 years combination of carpentry and plumbing experience would be considered an asset

This position is a unionized position under CUPE local 2698. The hourly wage rate is $38.96/hour as per the current collective agreement.

  • Inspects, conducts repairs and maintains parks, sport fields, turf, trails, fencing, gardens and playground equipment, outdoor recreation facilities and related outdoor spaces
  • Installs and maintains arena ice surface
  • Conducts repairs to facilities including painting, drywall, and basic carpentry
  • Checks and maintains vehicles and equipment used in the department
  • Removes, installs and repairs toilets, vanities, water supply and return lines, and other plumbing systems
  • Troubleshoots, repairs and maintains boilers, pumps and motors
  • Provides input on modifications or improvements to policies, procedures, and practices to improve the functions and safety of the department
  • Remove and replace ballasts and completes other small electrical works
  • Ability to operate in a safe effective manner skid steer and similar equipment.
  • Maintains accurate records for the operation and maintenance of facility equipment, systems, and components.
  • All persons employed by the District of Sparwood will be required to assist the municipality in providing emergency services. Duties assigned during an emergency may differ from regular duties
  • Assists other District departments and performs other duties as assigned

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Must have a strong mechanical aptitude to complete repairs to pumps, motors and HVAC systems effectively and efficiently
  • Demonstrated competency and skills related to carpentry, plumbing and electrical systems
  • Has strong problem-solving skills and ability to work under pressure
  • Must be able to utilize a computerized building operating system
  • Must be able to communicate effectively orally, via email and logbooks
  • Be able to perform labor-intensive work, frequently stand and walk throughout the day and work in inclement weather
  • Has exceptional customer service skills and works with the public in a positive and effective manner
  • Ability to prioritize assigned and emergent tasks

  • Good understanding of WorkSafe BC regulations and related safe work practices
