Recreation Programs

Looking for programs? Having a time of it making decisions?

Don’t sweat the details. The Sparwood Community and Facility Services Department provides public recreation and arts facilities and programs for residents and visitors to Sparwood.


Leisure Centre

The Leisure Centre building is located at the corner of Pine Avenue and Red Cedar Drive. It houses an arena, curling rink, fitness room, an all-season indoor pool (handicapped accessible), whirlpool, sauna, two racquetball – wallyball and squash courts, and a community hall. There is ample parking available for all indoor and outdoor users, with one parking lot at the main entrance to the north of the building and another to the south and west at the back of the building. The District offers a variety of leisure time programs which range from dance and fitness to skating, gymnastics and swimming. Recreational and cultural programs at the facility are sponsored by community groups throughout the year.

Arena

Home of the Sparwood Skating Club, Elk Valley Minor Hockey, Men’s and Ladies Hockey Teams, Public Skating and Shinny Hockey.

Located in the same complex as the pool, racquet courts, restaurant, curling rink, community hall and other facilities, the arena is home of the Sparwood Skating Club, Elk Valley Minor Hockey, Men’s Hockey Teams, a Ladies Hockey Team, Public Skating and Shinny Hockey. During the summer we host indoor events such as Coal Miner Days, Canada Day Celebrations, Roller Derby Bouts, and much more!

Recreation (pick up) hockey, tot skating, and public skating are offered several times a week from mid-September until the end of March. Call 250.425.0552 or visit the Leisure Centre located at 367 Pine Avenue in Sparwood for more information.

Pool

The Sparwood Aquatics Centre is a modern leisure pool featuring 3-lap lanes, slide, rope swing, whirlpool, sauna and dry land play centre. The main pool is fully accessible with zero-depth entry ramp. The Sparwood Aquatics Centre is the place you want to play, learn to swim and stay fit.

Fitness Centre, Racquet Courts & Climbing Wall

Welcome to the Sparwood Fitness Centre, where you can enjoy free weights, circuit training and cardio training including treadmills, stationary bikes, ellipticals and rowing machines. Our fitness centre is open 24-hours a day, 7-days a week with the purchase of a monthly or annual membership.

Our two racquet courts, are convertible to either racquet ball, squash or walleyball.  Racquets and balls are available for use during regular office hours. Looking for an activity full of challenges both physically and mentally? Come try rock climbing! Our wall, outfitted with auto-belays, is a small climbing and bouldering wall and geared towards beginner and moderate climbers. Harnesses and shoes are available for rent at the leisure centre office.

Curling

Home of the Sparwood Curling Club

Home of the best ice in the Elk Valley, the curling rink holds 4 sheets of ice for curling fun! The Sparwood Curling club hosts mens, ladies, mixed and youth leagues.

Parks & Playgrounds

Go Outside & Play!

Sparwood is full of wonderful parks and trails providing every kind of recreational opportunity you can imagine. We encourage residents and visitors to go out and enjoy these amenities but to please be mindful of the surrounding natural environment and other park users.

Central Park

Located in Sparwood Heights off Ponderosa Drive, Central Park is a manicured green space with a large playground area with a public washroom, the park has several access points from Ponderosa Drive, Hickory Crescent, Hickory Place and Pinyon Road.

Surrounded by residences, the park is fully fenced creating a safe place for you and your kids to run and play. A great place to go for a walk or spend the afternoon having a picnic.

Cypress Park

Located in Sparwood Heights on Cypress Drive, this small urban forest park is located in a beautiful pine forest with a small play ground with a central trail that connects to the Cypress Trail loop. A great place to spend an hour or just go for a short walk.

Jewel Park & Elk River Park

Sparwood’s newest parks are Jewel Park and the Elk River Park which can be accessed from Pine Avenue via the Elk River Trail.

This area is nestled against the Elk River and provides an entry to a large urban forest and natural wetland area. The park also provides access to the Elk River and Michel Creek for fishing and wildlife viewing.

There is a trail network of approximately 7 km which will take you on a beautiful walk through mature cottonwood and pine forests with vistas up and down the Elk River Valley.

Juniper Park

Located on Engelmann Spruce Drive, Juniper Park is a small grassy community park with a playground and a half basketball court (located on the adjacent block). Situated in the midst of a residential area, the park is a great place to bring your kids to play.

Lions Park

Located on the Leisure Centre grounds, the Lions and Heritage Park combined make Sparwood’s largest community park. The park has lots of opportunities for everyone, with a large playground, skate park, spray park, tennis, bocce and horse shoe courts, ball diamonds and soccer field; it’s the central hub of Sparwood. Enjoy the day picnicking in the manicured pine forest then stroll past the wetland to enjoy a morning or a full day.

Sparwood Skate Park

The Sparwood Skatepark Project is a joint project between the Sparwood Futures Society, the Sparwood Skatepark Society and the District of Sparwood.

The Sparwood Skatepark Society is a group of skateboarders, BMXers, scooter riders, inline skaters, community leaders and parents who are driven by a mission to improve our community through the development of a safe and inviting modern concrete skatepark for all ability levels and backgrounds of children, youth and the young at heart.

The park was completed in August 2018 and contains 18 independent features including a 3’ quarter pipe, open bowl, stair sets, rails, slappy features, ledges, bars, up gaps and hubbas, bank hips and pump bumps.

Spray Park

Cool off during those hot summer days!

For those hot days of summer, come out and enjoy this great green space located behind the Leisure Centre. This park is the perfect location to enjoy a picnic at one of the picnic tables located under the shelter or beside the playground. Also available in this area is beach volleyball and tennis (equipment is available from the Leisure Centre office).

For those who are a little more adventurous, there is a small skate park located behind the spray park.

The park which is open dawn till dusk from the May long weekend until September was made possible by the generosity of the volunteers from the Sparwood Futures Society.

Sports Fields

The District has a variety of sports fields for you to enjoy, whether it is slo-pitch, fast ball, soccer or rugby. There is something for everyone!

Sparwood hosts t-ball, minor ball, minor league soccer, slo-pitch and rugby on our two soccer fields and 5 ball diamonds. There is also beach volleyball and 2 tennis courts in Sparwood. For more information visit Sparwood.RECDESK.ca or call 250.425.0552.

Seniors Centre

Operated by the Sparwood Old Age Pensioners Society, S.O.A.P., the seniors centre hosts a variety of programs and activities throughout the year.  The centre focuses on hosting activities for people 50 years and older. The Sparwood Seniors drop-in Centre is located at 101 4th Avenue in Sparwood.
