SCEEAC Volunteers

The District of Sparwood (“District”) is looking for volunteers to be a part of the Socio-Community Economics Effects Advisory Committee (the “Committee”) for a three-year term.
You will work with representatives from the District and Teck to help ensure that impacts on the community of Sparwood from the Baldy Ridge Expansion at Elkview Operations (“BRE”) are mitigated and managed in the most adaptive, effective way possible.
You can review more information about the role of the committee and other processes taking place at www.sparwood.ca/livable.

Background

Teck is currently in the active mining stage for BRE. The project will increase the disturbance area of this operation by 862 hectares. One condition of Teck’s environmental approval includes a provision for this Committee.
Members of the Committee play a big role in the monitoring and review of adaptive management strategies for BRE. The Committee receives information and data from Teck, reviews plans, and proposes adjustments to the mitigation measures for various impacts that BRE has on the Sparwood community. Examples of effects include social and economic effects, visual, noise, blasting/vibration, dust, and others.

Responsibilities

Members are expected to attend all meetings, read the materials provided, conduct their own background research as needed, and bring thoughtful, unbiased input to the table. Members must be able to commit to the time commitments listed below.
While previous mine, environmental, or related experience is considered an asset, no previous formal education or experience is required to volunteer on this committee; training will be provided. Members are expected to have a general understanding of the role of mining in this community and be willing to learn and contribute to the group as well as to be representatives of the broader community and be willing to be a public face of this initiative.

Time Commitment

• Initial one-hour training/orientation session
• Regular meetings will be held at least four times per year and typically take between 1 and 3 hours.
• Expect to spend at least an hour before each meeting reviewing the agenda items and noting questions you may have.

How to apply

Please email us with details about why you would like to serve on this committee, as well as information on your relevant experience (i.e. participating in other organizations or work experience, etc.).
