2024 Summer Student Opportunities

The District of Sparwood is currently recruiting for the following summer student positions.

To be eligible for student employment at the District, applicants must be between 17 and 26 years of age, enrolled in secondary or post-secondary school at the time of application or be attending an educational institution prior to the summer term and be returning on a full-time basis for the upcoming school term.

Parks and Greenbelt Workers

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Primarily responsible for mowing and weed whipping all parks and greenbelts including edging around parking lots, sidewalks, planters and buildings
  • Assist with other park and building maintenance including painting of playground equipment, fences, benches, bleachers, picnic tables, hydrants, street signs and streetlight standards
  • Responsible for landscape and turf maintenance duties on District boulevards, sports fields and parks including planting, pruning, raking, fertilizing, digging and weeding
  • Daily litter pick up around town and sweeping with weekly solid waste removal from park and facility garbage cans
  • Operation of light trucks, mowers, edger’s, trimmers, blowers, roto rakes, pressure washers, wheelbarrows and various hand tools. Responsible for the cleaning and the general maintenance of equipment including fuel, oil and air filter checks
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Skills and Abilities / Work Demands

  • Valid Class 5 Drivers License or Class 7N Drivers License would be considered an asset
  • Experience relating to public works, landscaping, building maintenance or janitorial would be considered an asset
  • Expected to go through an equipment training and safety orientation program including a review of relevant District policies and procedures
  • Physical ability to continuously use hand tools, undertake labour intensive tasks, lift heavy objects, stand and walk throughout the day, and work in inclement weather.

Fire Services Assistant

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Inspect and assist with general cleaning, minor maintenance and repair to fire department facilities, apparatus and equipment including Fire Station #1, Fire Station #2 and the training facility
  • Assists with the inspection, review, development, and documentation of pre-incident plans
  • Wash and clean equipment, check equipment, apparatus, and other gas-powered hand tools etc. for fuel, oil, air and/or lubricants and/or top up as required and ensures safety and efficiency of operations
  • Develop and review business fire pre-plans and document on the fire department data base
  • Work within the community to promote and educate the general public with respect to Fire Smart program
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Skills and Abilities / Work Demands

  • Valid Class 5 Drivers License or Class 7N Drivers License
  • Experience relating to Fire Services and equipment maintenance or repair would be considered an asset
  • Computer data entry and programming skills would be an asset
  • Experience interacting with the public in a respectful and positive manner
  • Able to maintain strict confidentiality
  • Physical ability to continuously use hand tools, undertake labour intensive tasks, stand and walk throughout the day, and work in inclement weather

Administrative Assistant

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Organize and maintain paper and digital files
  • Assist with the review and coordination of various plans, procedures, and documents
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Skills and Abilities / Work Demands

  • Valid Class 5 Drivers License or Class 7N Drivers License
  • Organized, detail oriented, honest and a willingness to learn
  • Experience interacting with the public in a respectful and positive manner
  • Able to maintain strict confidentiality
  • Computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite

Employment will commence Monday, May 6 through to August 29, 2024.

Unless otherwise specified, eligible student applicants for available summer student positions will be evaluated through an interview process and selected in the following order:

  • Group 1: Post-Secondary students whose home address is within postal codes V0B 2G0 through to V0B 2G3.
  • Group 2: Post-secondary students eligible to work in Canada.
  • Group 3: Secondary students 17 years or older whose home address is within postal codes V0B 2G0 through to V0B 2G3.
  • Group 4: Secondary students 17 years or older who are eligible to work in Canada.

The current wage of $19.46 is in accordance with the Collective Agreement. In addition, student will receive an Active Living Pass which entitles the employee to full access to all municipal recreation facilities, such as the leisure centre pool, arena, weight room, racquet courts, climbing wall, and select programs.
