If there’s one thing we do really well, it’s mine!

Our metallurgical coal is some of the best in the world, and if you’ve seen precision industrial or surgical instruments, or used a stainless steel appliance, there’s a good chance its beginnings may have had something to do with our coal.

We’re a coal mining town, but that’s not all we have to do here.

We’re situated in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, surrounded by forests, wildlife, some of the purest water on earth, and an incredible array of things to do, just out the back door. We’ve got world class skiing just half an hour away, a great little golf course, incredible walking, biking and hiking trails, world class canoeing and kayaking on the Elk River, and exceptional hunting, fishing and off road adventuring. And don’t forget our top notch recreational centre, a hit with the kids, boasting a salt water pool, fitness centre and more. Farmers Market

Looking to buy local and support the community?

Well you are in the right place! The Sparwood Market is an ideal way to purchase local, fresh, and in-season produce and products to support our community. The Sparwood Market is a non-profit organization and a proud member of the BC Association of Farmers’ Markets.

The market is located in Titan Park and is open every Friday afternoon during the summer months (July to mid September) from 4pm to 7pm. There is ample parking available across the street at the Greenwood Mall.

There’s something for everyone at the Sparwood Market!

Come out and enjoy the live music, yummy baked goods and fare from the food trucks. You will also find beautiful home-made goodies, art, jewellery and so much more. Mine Tours

Discover more about what makes our community “yours and mine”!

The Sparwood Chamber of Commerce conducts interpretive coal mine tours in the months of July and August.

Call 250.425.2423 for more information or a reservation. The tours are popular and book quickly, and reservations are highly recommended.

Learn about the efficiency of 21st century coal mining with a tour of one of Canada’s largest open pit mines. Preregister at the Visitor Information Centre by the giant dump truck. Note that closed-toe shoes are required. Explore the history of underground coal mining with the aid of the Sparwood Mining History Walking Tour, also starting at the Visitor Information Centre. Antique mining machinery is displayed all over town, while larger-than-life murals portray the human side of the story.

Titan Truck

The sight of this colossal truck has been known to silence even the most chatter prone two-year olds, and occasionally even their parents. There’s nothing like it!

This truck has to be seen in real life in order to be believed. Built by General Motors of Canada, the 1974 Terex Titan – all 350 tonnes, 66 feet and 3,300 horsepower of it – lives in Sparwood. Two Greyhound buses and 2 pickups can fit into the box, all at once!

• Height with Box Raised = 17.07m (56’)
• Length = 20.09m (65’11”)
• Width = 7.57m (24’10”)
• Weight = 260 tonnes
• Payload = 350 tonnes
